Symbolism

Shield.  In 1878, Keeper Joseph O. Doyle led two shipwreck rescues so efficiently he was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal.  Red is the color of the suspension ribbon for the Gold Lifesaving Medal awarded during this period.  The two gold pallets symbolize his heroic actions on the nights of September 11, 1878 and October 23, 1878.  The maple (Sugar Maple) is the state tree of New York, and the maple leaf is the official arboreal emblem of Canada.  The maple leaf, lantern and fish hooks represent Doyles life story of having been born in Canada, working as a trapper and fisherman in New York, and finally being made Keeper of the Charlotte, New York Life Saving Station.  White symbolizes protection and sincerity, traits Joseph Doyle carried with him throughout his life.

Crest.  The autumn maple leaves symbolize the Fall time of year that the two rescues took place.  The lifesaving ring is part of the Life-Saving Service insignia.  The shield is in the shape of that displayed on the Lifesaving Medal and, as shown here, is filled with our national colors, representing the patriotism and professionalism of the JOSEPH DOYLE crew.

Supporters.  The oar and hook are from the U.S. Life-Saving Service seal, continuing the tribute to Joseph Doyles legacy as one of the most distinguished surfmen assigned to the Service.

Motto.  COURAGE DANS LA TEMPETE translates to COURAGE IN THE STORM and is a reflection of Joseph Doyles bravery in the face of great danger.

Seal.  The coat of arms as blazoned in full color on a circular white background enclosed by a dark blue border edged on the outside with a gold rope, inscribed USCGC JOSEPH DOYLE above and below WPC 1133, all gold.
